It is with great sadness that Chambers announces the passing away of our former member, Sir Andrew Gilbart.

Andrew was a member at Kings from 1973 until 2004 when he was appointed as a Circuit Judge, later becoming the Honorary Recorder of Manchester in 2008 and then, in 2013 , a High Court Judge in the Queen’s Bench Division. Illness prevented Andrew taking up that appointment until October 2014. He dealt with his illness then, and later, with characteristic energy, humour and resilience.

Andrew was appointed to silk in 1991 and served as joint head of Kings Chambers. He had a hugely successful planning practice and was a leading influence in the successful growth of chambers during the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Andrew always remained a steadfast and enthusiastic supporter of chambers, its members and staff. He had a big personality, a quick intelligence and a deep well of kindness. He was a distinguished barrister and judge with whom we are immensely proud to be associated. Andrew will be keenly missed by everyone at Kings Chambers and we extend our condolences to his wife Paula and his children, Tom and Ruth.
