
We are delighted to announce that Sam Karim KC has been appointed as a Deputy High Court Judge under section 9(4) of the Senior Courts Act 1981, by the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales, the Right Honourable The Baroness Carr Of Walton-on-the-Hill.
This appointment follows an open competition run by the Judicial Appointments Commission. The role of Deputy High Court Judge is reserved for those who have the experience and expertise to deal with very complex cases and will include work which would otherwise be undertaken by High Court Judges. He has been assigned to the Family Division.
Sam will continue in full time practice at Kings Chambers whilst undertaking his judicial responsibilities.
Sam was called to the Bar in 2002 and appointed Silk in 2017; one of the youngest at 38 years of age and at 15 years call. He specialises in administrative law, court of protection, public inquiries and arbitration, and has been ranked as a Band 1 Silk by legal directories. He is a prolific author, amongst which include Patterson & Karim on Judicial Review (3rd ed.), Bullen & Leake on Precedents, Tolley’s Finance & Law for the Older Client and Karim on Physical Restraints. Sam is also a Bencher of Gray’s Inn, a Judge of the National Court of Motorsports UK, Visiting Lecturer at UCL and a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. He sits as an arbitrator internationally, is the chair of the Northern Administrative Law Association and leads the court of protection and administrative law team at Kings.
