Job Description

The overall objective of this role will be to assist the both the Planning and Birmingham clerking teams in the day to day running of the members' practices and to ensure the seamless flow of work throughput in clerk’s room in order for chambers to run efficiently. The role will also require the successful candidate to provide some front of house function for clients who attend chambers for meetings or conferences. The job holder will work closely with the other Chambers’ clerks as well as the barristers themselves.

Responsibilities & duties are outlined below but not limited to;

  • Use of LEX case management system
  • Assisting barristers in the running of their practices and notifying them of commitments
  • Some diary management.
  • Sorting and reviewing post, logging papers, new instructions, briefs etc.
  • Management of barrister’s papers including scanning / confidential shredding / electronic storage
  • Liaising with the courts in respect of barrister listings
  • Billing cases; including private cases and legal aid.
  • Answering the telephones, fielding calls for chambers, particularly for Birmingham and planning teams
  • General clerking and administration duties
  • Attending social and charity functions on behalf of Chambers which will include evenings and some weekends
  • Establishing & maintaining good relationships with existing and potential solicitors to Chambers
  • Making sure meeting rooms are set up in advance of meetings or remote hearings
  • Ensuring that Chambers facility are clean, tidy and in working order


Qualities Required

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with people at all levels and to create and maintain good working relationshi
  • Must be smartly dressed, with a willingness to learn and work at times to tight deadlines
  • Capacity to thrive in a small team environment and is a team player who gets on well with colleagues.
  • Takes personal responsibility for delivering agreed objectives and takes professional pride in delivering a high quality standard of servi
  • Willingness always to represent Chambers in the best possible light.
  • Willing to learn new things to deal with a multi-faceted rol
  • A good knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel
