Job Title: Junior Civil Clerk

Location: Birmingham/Hybrid

Salary: £25,500 – £30,000 dependant on experience

In response to its continued growth and success and to provide the highest level of service to members and clients, Kings Chambers is now seeking an additional highly motivated, organised and committed individual to work with our progressive and dynamic clerking team as a Junior Clerk.

The objective of this role will be to provide assistance to both the Birmingham & Planning Clerking team in the day-to-day running of the members’ practices and to ensure the seamless flow of work in the clerk’s room in order for chambers to run efficiently. The role will also require the successful candidate to provide some front of house function for clients who attend chambers for meetings or conferences.

The job holder will work closely with the other Chambers’ clerks as well as the barristers themselves.

This is an interesting and varied position with the real opportunity for career progression, supporting colleagues, members of chambers and a wide range of professional clients.

This role is based in our Birmingham Chambers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Meeting and greeting clients and any other visitors to Chambers.
  • Showing clients to conferences rooms and sorting refreshments for clients including arranging lunches when needed. Setting up rooms for conferences, mediations and hybrid hearings; ensuring all technology is working properly.
  • Use of Lex diary management system to create and log opportunities and cases.
  • Downloading and uploading papers to OneDrive and ensuring when doing so that the case-folders in question are up-to-date and organised.
  • Assisting barristers in the running of their practices and notifying them of commitments
  • Ensuring Fair Allocation of Work data is updated in line with Chambers’ policy.
  • Creating and sending MS Teams or Zoom invitations for remote conferences.
  • Actioning administrative tasks for clients and barristers including supplier forms, for all members of Chambers and not limited to the Planning or Birmingham members.
  • Notifying members of their itinerary for the following day.
  • Assist with checking daily listings for court hearings.
  • Answering the telephones, fielding calls for other clerks and barristers.
  • Making sure Chambers is always kept tidy and presentable, including conference rooms, ensuring stationery is ordered and confidential shredding is managed appropriately.
  • General junior clerking and administration duties and ad-hoc errands; meeting barrister at court, printing documents etc.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Educated to a minimum GCSE standard with grades A*-C or 9-4 in English and Maths.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to deal with people at all levels and to create and maintain good working relationships.
  • Professional and smart presentation and a willingness to learn and to work to tight and often competing deadlines.
  • Capacity to thrive in a small team environment and is a team player who gets on well with colleagues.
  • Take personal responsibility for delivering agreed objectives and pride in delivering a high- quality service.
  • Ability to always represent Chambers in a professional manner.
  • Willing to deal effectively with a multi-faceted role and develop own skills.
  • Willing to provide support for the rest of the team.
  • Strong level of IT literacy including databases and common office systems. (e.g. Excel, Word, email- Outlook)

Desirable

  • A minimum of 1 year’s office experience gained in a similar environment.
