Helen Mulholland appears for Hospital Trust in sensitive case involving location of withdrawal of treatment in a child.

Mr Justice MacDonald yesterday handed down his second judgment in the case of Alta Fixsler. In May of this year, after hearing detailed medical evidence, the Judge found that it was not in the child’s best interests for life-sustaining treatment to continue. He directed that treatment, including mechanical ventilation, ought to be withdrawn and a palliatve care regime implemented.

The matter returned to Court as there was no agreement on where treatment ought to be withdrawn. The Judge found, after hearing evidence, that it was in the child’s best interests for treatment to be withdrawn at a Children’s Hospice.
