Warren Bank has supported the University of York for over a year, following Kings Chambers’ sponsorship of a table at their 2017 Law Society careers dinner, where a number of Leeds members attended.  Warren met and chatted with a few students who found his South African legal experience interesting and mentioned the possibility of his addressing the final-year Constitutional Law students in a lecture on the South African Constitutional settlement as this forms a focal point of their studies in comparative constitutional law.

Warren was contacted by one of the lecturers earlier in the year to follow up, and set a date for the lecture on 8th November.  Warren briefly sketched out the South African legal system, structure of the Courts and influence of Roman, Dutch and English Legal systems.  He then focused on the groundbreaking changes that were introduced by the Constitution and Bill of Rights, which have fundamentally changed the manner in which the law is now developed and against which all legislation is now tested.

The lecture was very well received and Warren was then taken on a tour of the state-of-the-art facilities enjoyed by the approximately 600 law students at York, including a modern Moot Court, mock “law offices”.  He was very impressed to see the students being coached in negotiating skills and mediation, as opposed to just dry legal input and hopefully this will continue to be a rewarding relationship between both Warren and the university.
