The Pandemic did not stop us from hosting our annual mini-pupillage programme. In fact, we extended the event by broadcasting the sessions more widely.
Nearly 200 students, 6th formers and other aspiring barristers watched members of chambers give a series of talks about our specialist areas of practice.
Normally, those talks are delivered to our 20 or so chosen mini pupils who come to chambers each year to the mini-pupillage programme. Given that the event had to be online, we thought we could reach out to anybody who might be interested in a career at the Bar. As part our aim of promoting equality of access to the profession, we made contact with a large number of universities, schools and 6th forms to promote the event.
On the day after our virtual “Open Day”, 20 mini pupils attended an interactive programme, doing advocacy in small groups and having the opportunity to hear from and pose questions to a senior circuit judge. Those mini pupils were selected from a large number of applicants.
“We really hope to be back in the business of hosting our mini pupils in chambers in 2021”, says barrister Matthew Hall, who helped organise the event. “It’s not quite the same when you don’t actually meet, but members and staff worked really hard to put the event on and it worked. The quality of application to the programme this year was so high. The Open Day not only gave a chance to those who missed getting a place but also to anyone else who is interested in the jobs we do”.
Kings Chambers has recently been rated in the top 10 chambers for training in a Legal Cheek survey.
