Mini Pupillage Programme

Kings Chambers is a leading set of barristers based in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham.

Our annual Mini Pupillage programme normally held in chambers in Manchester, but presently held online (see below), is an extensive introduction to a career as a barrister. The aim is to provide workshops on topics such as advocacy, talks from judges, presentations by senior and junior practitioners about their work, opportunities to meet, mix and discuss issues with members, pupils, barristers’ clerks and others involved in the management of Chambers.

Mini-Pupillage Programme 23rd and 24th June 2022

Kings Chambers is proud to have been one of the first chambers to hold a dedicated mini-pupillage event each year. This is our Mini Pupillage Programme. It is a 2-day event at which our selected mini pupils get to meet as many of our members as possible at presentations, advocacy workshops and organised court visits. Junior and senior members offer an insight into working life in their specialist areas. Senior clerks tell the mini pupils how chambers really works and each year we hear from a senior judge about the Bar as seen from the bench.

The Pandemic did not deter us in 2020 or 2021. We held the event online.

Hopefully, we will be back hosting the event in person in our Manchester Chambers in 2022. In either case, the event will take place on the 23rd and 24th of June 2022.

We have about 20 places on the Programme.

Applications are invited from students in the second year of their law degree, or third year of a non-law degree or above. We also very much encourage applications from graduates and in particular those who have already pursued another career path.

Because of the limitation on the number of places, we ask that anyone who applies should be seriously considering practice at the Bar and making an application for pupillage to these chambers in due course.

Kings Chambers is committed to promoting equality and diversity at the Bar. There is no Kings Chambers “type”, apart from being a barrister who is completely committed to providing a superb service to the client.

A copy of our application form can be found here. The closing date for applications is the 6th April 2022. Competition is fierce each year, so please take care with your form!

Mentoring Scheme for underrepresented groups at the Bar: October 2021 - June 2022

In addition to our mini-pupillage programme, Kings Chambers has recently set up a mentoring scheme for underrepresented groups at the Bar, alongside four other sets specialising in Planning, Property and Public Law, Cornerstone Barristers, Field Court Chambers, Landmark Chambers and FTB Chambers.

The scheme is intended to encourage undergraduates and postgraduates from groups that are not well represented at the Bar to consider becoming barristers. It will run from October 2021 to June 2022 and aims to provide advice and guidance to suitable candidates on the process of becoming a barrister specialising in planning, property and public law.

For those that wish to apply, they can download the application form from the webpage here, along with the guidelines for applicants are here.

Applications should be made to mentoring@cornerstonebarristers.com by midday on 8 October 2021. Successful applicants will be notified by e-mail by 29 October 2021.
