Ben Williams acting for Clitheroe Cricket Club (CCC) was successful in defending them against allegations of paying amateur players contrary to League Rules, and consequently bringing the League into disrepute. A negative finding may have seen them dismissed from the League and stripped of their title.
A disciplinary committee sat for three days and heard from 21 witnesses as well as considering a further 12 written statements. In dismissing the charges in their entirety, the Panel found that the people running the club were ‘of high probity and standards’. Three first team players were also charged with having taken payment to play and they also successfully defended all charges levelled against them. In a matter of enormous significance to the League, the outcome means CCC can now receive the League Title which they had won in the first season in the League.
Ben Williams was instructed by Robin Stephens of Forbes solicitors.
