Rory Goodson is a member of chambers’ Business and Property team, and has a wide-ranging practice across a variety of fields.
Rory’s practice involves him appearing frequently in both the High Court and the County Courts, including regularly in the Circuit Commercial Court and the Business and Property Courts across the Northern and North Eastern Circuits. His recent work covers the spectrum from technical insolvency and probate applications, to larger multi-day commercial and property law trials. Rory also has a busy paper practice encompassing advice and pleadings.
Prior to commencing pupillage, Rory obtained an undergraduate degree in Jurisprudence from Trinity College Oxford and completed an LLM at the University of Chicago Law School, before working in London for a leading boutique commercial litigation firm.
Rory has acted and appeared in a variety of banking and finance matters. These include disputes relating to secured lending and further varieties of guarantee and debt instrument, as well as actions under the Consumer Credit Act 1974.
Commercial litigation forms a large portion of Rory’s practice. He appears frequently in the Circuit Commercial Court, including successfully representing a defendant in the multi-day trial of a debt claim. More broadly, Rory advises and appears in a wide range of commercial litigation, from procedural hearings and interim applications, to multi, intermediate, and fast track trials.
Rory appears and provides advice across the fields of company and partnership law, including in litigation under the Companies Act 2006, shareholder disputes, and matters arising from share purchase agreements.
Rory regularly acts and advises on a wide range of applications under the Insolvency Act 1986 and Insolvency (England and Wales) Rules 2016, including winding up and bankruptcy petitions, applications in respect of administrations and the responsibilities and powers of IPs, and claims for the recovery of funds improperly removed from insolvent estates/entities.
Rory has recently begun to develop a practice in respect of wills and probate. This has involved appearing both for and against applications to remove an executor of a deceased’s estate, appearing in contempt proceedings against an executor arising from breach of their duties, and advising in respect of actions under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975.
Rory’s professional negligence practice encompasses actions in respect of a broad range of professionals, with experience including in respect of solicitors’ and surveyors’ duties in property transactions.
Rory is developing a wide practice in the field of real estate litigation both in-court and on paper. He is regularly instructed in respect of commercial lease renewals under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1954, as well as disputes arising from boundaries and easements, restrictive covenants, and questions under the Land Registration Act 2002. This has led to him appearing in multi-day trials in both the County Court and the Upper Tribunal.
