Ian has a thriving commercial practice, with a particular interest in insolvency (both personal & corporate) and property litigation.

He is frequently instructed in high-value cases, worth up to seven figures, regularly appearing in one-day and multi-day litigation in both the High Court and County Courts. Ian is also well-experienced working in a team, alongside KCs and senior juniors.

Reported cases in which Ian has appeared include:

  • Waldrop v Searson [2024] EWHC 2364 (Ch) – Ian successfully secured a 9-month order for committal (suspended on conditions) against a personal representative of an estate, acting on behalf of a beneficiary.
  • Secretary of State for Transport v Stocks & Stocks – REF/2024/0328/0329 – Ian successfully represented the Secretary of State for Transport in an application for first registration of title based on adverse possession and deduction of title.

Ian previously had a successful career in commercial sport. At City Football Group, the parent company of Manchester City F.C. & others, he negotiated multi-million-pound international commercial sponsorships, as well as the Amazon “All or Nothing” series, and helped secure approval of left sleeve branding on Premier League shirts. He also served on the organising team responsible for delivery of the inaugural Invictus Games in 2014, spearheaded by Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex.

The year before pupillage, Ian was a judicial assistant in the Court of Appeal, working first with Lord Justice Simon, and then with Lady Justice Simler.

Ian has a deep forensic understanding of the law, with two first-class law degrees from Cambridge University (BA & LLM) and numerous academic prizes. He combines this with a laser-like focus on his client’s primary commercial and strategic objectives, informed by his own high-level commercial career.

Expertise

Ian is frequently instructed in consumer credit disputes, notably cases arising out of the ‘unfair relationship’ provisions under the Consumer Credit Act 1974.

Ian also has experience of both advising and litigating in disputes concerning assets bought by consumers under credit finance agreements.

Commercial litigation is the lynchpin of Ian’s practice with experience in all aspects of the litigation process from interlocutory applications (including security for costs and pre-action disclosure applications) through to multi-day trials in the Circuit Commercial Court.

Notable examples include:

  • successfully securing a £3.1m judgment in the Circuit Commercial Court against a Singaporean-incorporated company in a case raising issues with service out and share valuation.
  • acting for a defendant bringing a £500k counterclaim in a 6-day sale of goods dispute in the Circuit Commercial Court (ongoing).
  • instructed alongside Lesley Anderson K.C. in a Circuit Commercial Court dispute worth circa £9m (ongoing).
  • successfully securing summary judgment for a Premier League footballer in a reputationally-sensitive case.
  • acting for a counterclaiming defendant in a sale of goods dispute worth circa £600k proceeding in the Circuit Commercial Court (ongoing).
  • advising on the nature of mercantile agents under the Factors Act 1889 and on the application of the Commercial Agents (Council Directive) Regulations 1993.

Ian is regularly instructed in both corporate and personal insolvency disputes. His broad experience includes:

  • office holder claims against former directors for misfeasance, transactions at undervalue, preferences and transactions defrauding creditors;
  • Insolvency Administration Orders;
  • applications to annul bankruptcy orders;
  • the fixing of administrators’ fees;
  • winding up and bankruptcy petitions;
  • applications to restrain presentation/advertisement of petitions; and
  • applications to extend administrators and applications to end administrations with a discharge from liability.

Notable examples of recent instructions include:

  • securing a successful court-endorsed outcome in a legally complex case in which an administration generated a significant surplus, but in which it was not possible to contact the Company’s sole director/shareholder to effect a distribution;
  • successfully challenging a CVA supervisor’s decision under s.7 Insolvency Act 1986, who had issued a certificate of non-compliance for failure to maintain tax liabilities and securing dismissal of the consequent winding up petition; and
  • advising on the scope and enforcement of fixed and floating charges under a debenture, and the extent to which a guarantor’s claim to subrogation is restricted by s. 176ZB Insolvency Act 1986.

Ian practises in all areas of real property and landlord & tenant law, in both commercial and residential contexts. 

Ian’s recent cases and advisory matters have included:

  • commercial landlord & tenant, including forfeiture, dilapidations and opposed & unopposed renewals under the Landlord & Tenant Act 1954;
  • land registration, including applications to the First-tier Tribunal (Property Chamber);
  • adverse possession concerning both registered and unregistered land;
  • easements;
  • restrictive covenants;
  • enforcement of charging orders;
  • trusts of land & TOLATA;
  • boundary disputes;
  • nuisance & trespass;
  • mortgages, including FCA regulation and the position of LPA receivers; and
  • residential landlord & tenant, including possession proceedings and tenancy deposit disputes.

Notable examples of recent instructions include:

  • Secretary of State for Transport v Stocks & Stocks – REF/2024/0328/0329 – Ian successfully represented the Secretary of State for Transport in an application for first registration of title based on adverse possession and deduction of title.
  • advising on liability for nuisance due to flooding in a technically complex claim against the Canal Rivers Trust.
  • successfully securing possession on behalf of LPA receivers in a factually intricate claim in which the court had to consider the precise nature of the agency relationship between an LPA receiver and mortgagor.

Ian is well positioned to receive instructions given his previous career in sport. At CFG Ian worked at the interface of commercial sport, contract and sports regulation. CFG own a number of football clubs across the world, giving Ian insight into regulatory matters for a number of leagues including the Premier League, MLS, the J-League, and the A-League. His experience of the sports industry was further consolidated by participation in the Mishcon de Reya Sports Law Academy (2016).

Ian has begun to develop particular experience in the sphere of technology and construction. Most notably, assisting Andrew Singer KC in an arbitration regarding a contractual dispute arising out of the construction of a large housing estate.

Ian also supported Lesley Anderson KC in a matter concerning a multi-million pound property development, involving issues of professional negligence, misrepresentation and breach of contract.
