Alan specialises in planning, highways, public rights of way, road traffic regulation, town and village greens and compulsory purchase. He has been involved in numerous significant planning inquiries for all kinds of development, including housing, shopping, employment, leisure, windfarms, waste disposal and minerals; he has also promoted several road schemes and compulsory purchase orders. Alan acts for both the public and private sector.

Alan has had wide experience of his specialist areas of practice before various tribunals and in a wide range of inquiries, including section 78 planning appeals, called-in planning applications, enforcement appeals, lawful use certificate appeals, local plan inquiries, highways and road traffic regulation inquiries, rights of way inquiries, compulsory purchase inquiries and boundary commission inquiries. Alan also undertakes town and village green and commons work and has often acted in the role of an independent inspector holding non-statutory inquiries into applications for new greens. He advises both in conference and in writing in his main areas of practice and also more generally in the local government sphere.

Alan practises in both lower and higher courts in his areas of expertise and undertakes a significant volume of judicial review work, including the defence of immigration and asylum cases on behalf of the Treasury Solicitor.
