New Head of Chambers

Chambers is delighted to announce the appointment of Nicholas Braslavsky QC as head of chambers.

Dr Braslavsky, a member of Kings Chambers since 1983 and a former deputy head of the set, takes on the role previously held by Frances Patterson QC, following her appointment as Law Commissioner earlier this month.

"This is an exciting time to be elected as head of a set whose strategy has yielded significant success in recent years
demonstrated in our rise up Chambers & Partners’ 2010 national rankings by 15 places to 13th in the UK.  We aim to consolidate our position regionally and nationally over all of our areas of practice and to grow in number slowly and steadily as we have in the past,” explained Dr Braslavsky. “Secondly we are keen to develop our practice in the North East and, in particular, in Leeds from our chambers’ base in Leeds City centre. We purchased our building in Park Square the week before Christmas and this demonstrates our growing commitment to the region. We hope to have more members based in Yorkshire and the North East, handling more and better cases.”

Dr Braslavsky served on the Bar Council’s Task Force as the Northern Circuit representative in discussions aimed at consolidating the Bar’s response to the new regulations coming into force in 2010 for barristers and solicitors to enter Legal Disciplinary Partnerships.*

He explained that while Kings Chambers will monitor the new regime, the set is well placed to remain an independent, referral set of barrister’s chambers.

“Solicitors want a strong, independent referral bar, providing standards of excellence in advocacy and allied legal services. They want individuals who know the law and can handle complex factual situations so that the lay individual or corporate client can be expertly represented in court. The bar has to be excellent otherwise it has no place in the modern provision of legal services. It can’t simply be another way of providing the same service that solicitors already provide. Cases of any weight or complexity need specialist input and we believe solicitors value this.”
