Profile

Matthew has a combined practice of employment and costs law.

His work was for may years largely insurance funded work.  As a result Matthew has substantial experience advising and respresenting large employers both in respect of disputes with individuals and multiple claims, such as those for protective awards.  He has effectively become standing employment counsel to a number of organisations. He deals with common law contractual disputes, especially those related to employment, for example disputes concerning restrictive covenants.

Other work has involved internal employment disputes, for example, advising local authorities on internal disciplinary proceedings at directorate level, advising on TUPE in contracting out matters, advising on disputes over local authority car mileage allowances and advising in partnership with other members of chambers where there is a cross over with local government law.

Matthew is often required to provide advice and representation to local authority employers and unions with respect to large scale multiple part time pension claims and other equal pay claims.

Matthew's costs practice encompasses all areas of costs work but in particular detailed assessment hearings and appeals where he is instructed by both paying parties to attack costs and recovery work for receiving parties.
