Profile:

Matthew practises in all areas of Town and Country planning, Environmental law, Local Government law, Highway law, Compulsory Purchase and Licensing law.  He acts for both public and private clients throughout England and Wales.  He has a diverse client base and has been involved in cases involving all areas of the above specialisms; these include major retail proposals, housing sites, mineral and landfill proposals, sports facilities, agricultural conversions and diversifications and stopping-up and diversion orders. Matthew has also appeared at examination-in-public under the new Local Development Framework.  He has appeared in Magistrate’s Courts, Standards and Ethics board hearings, Crown Courts, the Lands Tribunal, County Courts, the High Court and the Court of Appeal, as well as acting in numerous Public Inquiries throughout England and Wales.  Matt has also delivered lectures and seminars to the RTPI, undertaken supervisory work of students on a pro-bono basis at the Manchester University Legal Advice Centre and regularly delivers talks and seminars to both public and private bodies.  Matthew offers a dynamic and pragmatic approach in all areas, whether it is when ‘on his feet’ or when in an advisory role.

Significant Work includes:

Significant cases include – the Macclesfield Borough Local Plan review, a joint proposal for housing and sports grounds in Harrogate, a major retail warehouse in Bishop Auckland, along with numerous large housing proposals, enforcement proceedings, licensing appeals, compulsory purchase inquiries and environmental related prosecutions and defences, as well as involvement with one of the first examinations in public under the new LDF.  In terms of the court work, Matt regularly undertakes both prosecution and defence work.
